Artist Bio
Christine Sommerville is a contemporary abstract painter based in Atlanta, Georgia. Drawing on her love of nature and fashion, she creates layered abstract works marked by subtle complexity and a considered visual tension.
Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Christine earned a BFA in Textile/Surface Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology and went on to live and work in New York and England before establishing her studio in Atlanta. Her design background continues to shape the way she builds a composition through pattern and the interplay of positive and negative space.
Artist Statement
My background in textile design shapes how I think about color and form. Through an intuitive process of layering and editing, each piece gradually finds its own rhythm and balance.
I'm drawn to composition as a way of holding simplicity and complexity together, not resolving one into the other, but letting both remain present. The result is work that stays open to interpretation, where meaning unfolds slowly rather than all at once.
My hope is that each painting invites viewers to slow down and find their own connection.
